What is Qi [chi]? Qi is a term in Chinese Medicine that
represents the lifeline or flow of energy throughout the body. It is
believed that Qi travels through the body on channels called meridians
and a correct balance of Qi in the body helps maintain a person's health.
Does it hurt? Acupuncture needles are very thin, typically not much thicker than a strand of hair. In some cases, you will not even know the needles are in place. In others, there may be some tingling, warmth, heaviness or a feeling of the Qi moving up and down the channels. Most people find acupuncture extremely relaxing and are able to fall asleep during treatment.
What can I expect when I go in for the first time? When you come in for the first time, Kathy will do a thorough intake about the health issue that brought you in and review your whole health in general. In addition, Kathy will check your pulse and look at your tongue. Since most new patients have not had acupuncture before, Kathy will explain what is going to happen during treatment and discuss Chinese herbs if necessary.
How many treatments will I need? Treatment length depends upon the duration, severity, and nature of your ailment. For an acute ailment, a single treatment may suffice. For chronic pain, more treatments will be necessary. Kathy will create a treatment plan during your first appointment.
Are the needles clean? Yes, only sterile, disposable needles are used.
What should I do before I come in for treatment? Plan to eat before you come in for treatment so you're not hungry during the session. Also, if you're going to be doing vigorous exercise, do it before treatment instead of after.
